Nong Khai
Nong Khai is on the Mekong River that forms the Northeastern Thai Laos border. It is a good place to experience rural Thai life and culture. I was fortunate to be there during the Full Moon festival.
Sala Kaew Ku Sculpture Park.
The sculptures are from both Hindu and Thai cultures.
Some of the sculptures were to commemorate people.
I am not sure who these people were.
One the grounds was a temple to commemorate one its founders.
I thought it strange to have a bath tub in a temple...
...but it turned out to be one of the possessions of the park's founder that were collected here.
It was a very pleasant and interesting place to visit.
The Nong Khai Aquarium. It is part of the university.
It had a huge aquarium you could walk though in a tunnel.
Many of the fish were local so it was very interesting to see.
These catfish liked to 'stand'.
The best way to get around.
The Mekong River in town.
Grilled coconut on a stick.
Like Loas there are many restaurants on the river.
Entrance the temple were many people celebrated the Full Moon Festival. You can see the fire balloons going from left to right over the entrance.
Along the streets there were many people selling krathong or traditional banana leaf floats
There were many people coming to set their krathong in river or watch the entertainment.
The Monks would give you a blessing and put a cotton bracelet on you for good luck.
Lighting incense.
As usual food is always close by :-)
There was traditional entertainment throughout the night.
Setting off fire balloons.
It was often a family effort.
A successful release with the full moon in the background.
The balloons could often be seen far off in the distance. The further it went the better for you.
