'Five Day Market' in Kalaw
There is a 'Five Day Market' that rotates between five local towns. Everything from fruits and vegetables to meats and fish is sold. It is all very fresh so people come to stock up for a few days. Fortunately it was in Kalaw while I was there.
The main street in Kalaw on the way to the market.
First, breakfast in the market, Here the lady is serving fried tofu.
Breakfast with the tofu and fish cooked in a banana leaf.
Very good peanut brittle.
The regular local market.
The five day market.
The vegetables are all very fresh, harvested the previous day.
Tomatoes probably grown on Inle Lake.
Fish and eels from Inle Lake
This lady would have carried her display of shallots to market in the basket behind her, probably from many miles away in the mountains, The strap goes over her head to carry the weight.
Different types of dried beans and lentils and garlic.
"D" cell batteries are an excepted unit of measure. They are a consistent weight and common. There are no 'certified' metal weights, so you are better off with batteries.
Happy to make a sale.
It was very busy. Since the market was only in town every five days, people would stock up.
BBQ'ed Eel. Apparently they are very tasty, but I did not try them.
Some ducks seemed to not want to look at the market. Their eggs were probably being sold there and did not want to watch :-)
This lady probably had been bringing her dried chilli peppers to the market for many years.
